Agia Galini is situated in the Province (or prefecture) of Rethymnon. On a map the visitor can find the village of Agia Galini on the south coast of the island, to the south-west of Heraklion. It's a popular, and busy holiday resort that grew out of a small fishing village, and it nestles in a narrow valley with a harbour that's packed with local fishing and trip boats, in addition to the craft of those visiting Crete's shores.

The name, Agia Galini, roughly translated as meaning serenity, is something of a misnomer today. Once a tiny fishing village looking out to the Gulf of Mesara, it was discovered by small groups of early 20th century visitors who enjoyed its charm and peace. However, during the last half of the 20th century and the explosion of foreign holiday travel, the village has grown and thrived as a popular holiday resort with all the commercial trapping that go with it. Cars for hire, shops, rooms to rent, cafes, bars and hotels crowd along the narrow streets of the village, as you stoll down to the harbour. The restaurants and olive wood souvenir shops, sit alongside small hotels and private dwellings. Steep steps, old stone paths, colourful doorways and plenty of foliage give the centre a true picture postcard appeal to this day, whilst the modern sea defences, larger hotels and large, central car-park ensure the area is capable of accommodating its numerous twenty first century guests.

Nearby, to both east and west, are tiny beaches, beautiful clear waters, grottoes and amazing cliffs. For a memorable holiday of sun, sea and sand with all the facilities the holidaymaker might need, then Agia Galini offers it all.
